Join Jack Stone as he walks us through the essentials of painting with acrylics and oil. For Rank Beginners through Ranking Amateurs, this class will cover it all and allow each participant to grow where he or she is as a painter. For those who have already developed their wings, Jack Stone will be there to help you break through impasses and reach higher levels. It all comes down to knowing how to structure form and space - whatever the subject matter- and how to use color to transmit the light and life of it. The structured core of the class will work from still life subjects, whereas those who are ready for a wider range of topics should bring their own selected photos (photos of people or landscape - bring a handful so we can select the best).

“Maskmaking is about journeying beneath the masks we wear and touching the soul,” says Matthew Fox in Faces of Your Soul: Rituals in Art, Maskmaking, and Guided Imagery. Masks have been used throughout history for both ceremonial and practical purposes. Masks play an important role in cultures worldwide. From Africa to Asia and North America to Australia, one finds masks to protect from evils, espouse an ideal, communicate with spirits, or seek revelation.
In this class we will use guided imagery, journaling, and maskmaking to dissolve creative blocks; encourage self-awareness; heal the mind, body, and spirit; and expand creative energy…all in an atmosphere of freedom and encouragement. At the completion of this series of classes participants will take home three beautiful works of art, as well as an increased awareness of self and feeling of well-being.
Session 1: Engaging Our Spirit Guide (Exploring the Creative Process)
Session 2: Meeting Our Totem Animal (Masks of Leather, Fur, and Feather)
Session 3: Connecting with Our Ancestors (Ceramic Masks)
Session 4: Experiencing the Self (Plaster Face Molds)
Session 5: Loose Ends (Completing Unfinished Works)
Session 6: Faces of the Soul (Reveal Masks, Share Insights, and Debrief the Experience)
Note: Maskmaking entails covering the face and working with materials such as lotions, vaseline, plaster gauze, clay, paints and glazes, and vegetable tanned leather. Please notify the instructors in advance of any material(s) to which you may be allergic and we will attempt to find a suitable alternative. Also inform the instructors of any concerns you may have. If you have any respiratory problems, such as asthma, you may want to sculpt your masks with open mouths. If you have issues with claustrophobia or darkness, you may want to sculpt your masks with eye-holes. When creating plaster face molds, you may prearrange a signal so that if you feel uncomfortable at any time during the process, you can signal the instructor to remove the mask. The process takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes once the gauze has been applied. Most find the warm gauze to be very relaxing, like a spa treatment. Be aware that it takes only a couple of seconds to remove the mask from your face if need be. It is of the utmost importance that everyone feel comfortable with the process and enjoy his or her experience making the masks.
